Tuxedo No. 2

I found this recipe on nytimes.com.

absinthe, gin, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, orange bitters

The Tuxedo cocktail was first documented in the 1900 Bartender’s Manual by Harry Johnson. The drink is named after the Tuxedo Club in New York, which is also credited with being the birthplace of the tuxedo jacket.

This one is Tuxedo No. 2, meaning there is a No. 1, as well as a 2, 3, and 4. Each one changes things up a bit with a ratio of gin and switching around sherry for the absinthe. From what I’ve read, nowadays the No. 2 is the most popular of all the Tuxedo cocktails.

This is a lovely sipping drink. It definitely has a martini vibe, but it goes down easier than a martini. The gin is softened by the sweetness from the maraschino liqueur and the surprise of orange (my first time using orange bitters!). The glass is just “rinsed” with absinthe, so it’s barely there, but it adds a nice herby note.

I’m really trying to find words to describe tastes, folks. Forgive me if it’s still a bit clumsy.

And more importantly, I think this is a new favorite. A far cry from the icy summer coolers I’ve been focusing on lately, but so very tasty. Yes, a new favorite.
