The Dutch Connection

genever (Dutch gin), Lillet Rose, Peychaud’s bitters, tonic water

I found this recipe on imbibemagazine.com.

I put this cocktail on the list of drinks I want to try because it is a unique recipe that uses genever. Most genever recipes are riffs on classic gin cocktails – not many recipes that are written just for genever.

And I wanted to try it so much that I invested in a bottle of Lillet Rose…I like Lillet Blanc enough that I was pretty sure I’d love it. (I do.) When we’re talking about red fortified wines for cocktails, here is my rundown now after recently trying both Dubonnet and Lillet Rose:
sweet v – sweet and bitter, the most herbal, a little goes a long way
Dubonnet – sweet and less bitter, berry flavor, can drink straight
Lillet Rose – no bitter notes, citrus flavor, bright, can drink straight

Technically Lillet Rose is a rosé, but it’s helpful to me to line these three up for comparison. Each one has their place in the bar, just very different fortified wines.

And this cocktail is very nice. Labled a riff on a G&T, the genever is a mellower flavor than gin, so there is more taste of the Lillet and Peychaud’s, and less of the spirit. I’d actually like to give this one a try without the tonic…I think I’d probably like it even more.
