The US is a hot mess right now – even this project is named after one of the messes. But we had a tiny glimmer of good news today, and it calls for a bright, happy drink. All four officers in the murder of George Floyd have been charged. We have a long way to go, but it’s something. I’ll drink a colorful drink to that. Moving in the right direction. 🇺🇸
The modern version of this drink is tequila, orange juice, and grenadine – a mixture that came about in the 1970s. Pop culture plays a big part in the tequila sunrise’s popularity! In 1972, Mick Jagger tasted it and decided he loved it, so he and his entourage started drinking them. They even named the tour the “cocaine and tequila sunrise tour”. 🥴 Those musta been the days. Besides the Rolling Stones, we have the Eagles. And if you are like me, you are unable to hear the words “tequila sunrise” without getting a song in your head. I just read the lyrics to the song and they aren’t nearly as happy as this drink looks.
Because the drink is so simple, I think this is one of those that requires good ingredients, or it might be terrible. I can see that cheapo oj would ruin it. There is a decent chance that we are all going to get vaccinated and I’m going to be allowed back into the world, ordering my first mixed drinks at a bar at 52 years old. And I might find myself shocked that not every bartender uses the best ingredients, or sharpens their knives for beautiful garnishes, or carefully measures and spends a full 15 minutes making a drink. 😂 Or maybe I’ll just be so happy to be out that I won’t notice.
