Swedish Glögg

I found this recipe on thespruceeats.com.⁣

red wine, bourbon, sugar, orange zest, raisins, cardamom pods, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, almonds⁣

I have a goal to try as many regional winter-warmer drinks as I can find (provided the ingredients aren’t so local that I can’t find them here in Texas). I’m starting out with Glögg, a common drink in Nordic countries since the 16th century. ⁣

I read a bunch of recipes for this, and I get the idea that it’s sort of like the family spaghetti recipe – everyone has their own way of making it. The basics that all the recipes seem to share are red wine, cardamom, cinnamon, orange, raisins and almonds. The extra booze isn’t in all the recipes, and not all of the recipes add sugar. I also saw several that use aquavit, something I don’t have in my bar yet.⁣

This is an excellent winter cocktail. The liquid is steeped with the spices and orange peel for an hour, which makes Glögg really flavorful and complex. The traditional garnish is to add raisins and almonds in the bottom of the glass…I heard somewhere that the almonds are for good luck, but I haven’t been able to find any more information on that.⁣
