Strawberry Gin Smash

I found this recipe on thekitchn.com.

gin, lime juice, simple syrup, mint leaves, strawberries, soda⁣

Today’s drink was my choice because it’s very hot in Texas today, and I had strawberries in the fridge. A quick google search for summertime cocktails with strawberries brought me to this. ⁣

I’ve done one other Smash cocktail in the project, that one was a Brandy Smash. But Smashes vary widely – you can use any booze as long as you follow the guidelines of: booze, mint leaves, simple syrup, lemon or lime juice. You can also change it up by muddling fruit with the mint, or adding a little soda like I did here. Mint Julep is a smash, too.⁣

The Smash goes as far back as Jerry Thomas’ How to Mix Drinks book in 1862. This guy’s name keeps coming up in my research! Turns out he’s the “father of American mixology”.⁣

This drink is perfect, aside from one element. The strawberries. I’m not having great luck getting good strawberries lately. The last ones I got were organic, and they tasted okay, once I threw out the bruised and rotting ones. These are hydroponic (grown without soil), and they look beautiful, but they’re a little tasteless. I’ll keep trying.⁣
