Sloe Gin Fizz

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

sloe gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, soda⁣

So much learning going on with this project! I didn’t know what sloe gin was, now I do. It is gin mixed with the juice of sloe berries, a berry that grows wild in the hedgerows in England. Apparently these berries are terrible to eat on their own, but take on a new taste when soaked in gin. ⁣

Sloe gin can be mixed in cocktails, or enjoyed on its own in cooler weather as a warm drink. I couldn’t find much history on this cocktail, other than it is about 100 years old, fell out of fashion in the 1960s, and is sort of back again.⁣

Where has sloe gin been all my life! What a surprise! I’m going to compare it to Chambord, a raspberry liqueur I recently tried. I love the berry flavor, but Chambord is overwhelmingly sweet for me. Sloe gin has the berry flavor with only a little sweetness. I had a taste of it straight, and I can see how it would be nice to sip as a warm drink. (I’ll have to remember to give that a try when I switch over to winter warmer drinks!)⁣

I have a bit of family lore about this cocktail. When my mom was old enough to go into a bar with her friends and order her first drink, the only cocktail she could remember was sloe gin fizz. She ordered it, and politely drank it while thinking it was terrible. (She is in her 70s now and still not much of a drinker. She’s of the “I’ll take a glass to be polite but I may not drink it” crowd. ⁣😂
