Shady Lady

1 oz tequila
1 oz melon liqueur
4 oz grapefruit juice

I found this recipe in the book Classic Cocktails of the Prohibition Era.

I don’t have any history on this drink, so I decided to dive into “shady lady” a bit to see what came up. There is a film, an aircraft, a film about the aircraft, a legal brothel in Nevada, a boat, and a musical. And seven songs.

I listened to most of them, and my favorite was Shady Lady by Uriah Heep. Classic 70s rock stuff. While listening to the song I could totally picture the band with long hair, bell-bottoms, big chunky shoes, and maybe a roach clip on the lapel. Then I looked up a photo of the band and I was spot on. (Google the song, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.)

So, the cocktail. I’ve said before that tequila loves grapefruit, and this rings true here, too. It would have been a fine drink without the Midori, but it’s really nice with it. It rounds out the bitterness of the grapefruit juice a bit, and gives it a beautiful color. It’s Friday night, so I’m having a second one of these.
