Scofflaw

I found this recipe in the Savoy Cocktail Book and on liquor.com.

rye whiskey, dry vermouth, lemon juice, grenadine, orange bitters

This drink has a great history.

In 1923, during Prohibition in the US, a member of the Anti-Saloon League had an idea to shame the people who continued breaking the law to drink. He offered a $200 prize to whoever could submit the best new word “which best expresses the idea of a lawless drinker, menace, scoffer, bad citizen, or whatnot”.

The $200 prize was a big bounty, and there was a huge response. Two people submitted “Scofflaw” and shared the prize.

A week later, at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, they released a new cocktail named “Scofflaw”.

No one remembers the name of the guy who ran the contest (it’s Delcevare King), but the Scofflaw cocktail lives on, and so does Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. And I doubt the word was so scathing that it shamed anyone into giving up their cocktails. But we get a good story out of it.

On to the drink. The first sip knocked me back a little – it is a lot of dry vermouth and that is all I could taste. On subsequent sips I eased into it and started really liking it. I made a second with half the amount of vermouth and a little more grenadine (for sweetness) and I found it much better.
