Scarlet O’Hara

I found this recipe on thespruceeats.com.⁣

Southern Comfort, cranberry juice, lime juice⁣

I added Southern Comfort to my bar. I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but I noticed that drink recipes call for SoCo very specifically, so I figured it had to be something unique. (Some recipes call for “Southern USA style whiskey liqueur”, but we know what that means.) Turns out, it’s a liqueur, not a whiskey. It’s sort of whiskey-flavored, but a little sweet, spicy, and fruity. I haven’t totally decided if I like it yet. It tastes…hmmm…manufactured? Like closer to a White Claw than a real distilled spirit. ⁣

It is, however, very smooth. I can see why people do shots of it.⁣

I thought I’d start with this cocktail, because it put Southern Comfort on the map in 1939 when Gone With The Wind came out. Good place to start. But this drink just tastes like cranberry juice to me. SoCo is so smooth that the cranberry juice is a stronger flavor.⁣

One more Southern Comfort story. Apparently, Janis Joplin was a big fan, and she frequently drank it on stage. The company was so grateful for the free marketing that they bought her a lynx fur coat and matching hat. (You can do a Google image search if you want to see Janis Joplin head to toe in lynx fur.) ⁣
