Paper Plane

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, lemon juice

I’ve been wanting to try this cocktail for a long time…it’s one of those weird ones with ingredients you can’t imagine together, in this case it’s bourbon and Aperol. But I had to wait, because it had that extra pesky ingredient Amaro Nonino. I didn’t have it in my bar, and this is the only drink recipe I can find that uses it.

Amaro Nonino is described by Difford’s Guide as “Bittersweet with layers of fruit, bitterness and spice built over a lightly spirituous caramel base.” I found a Food and Wine article from 2019 (ah, remember those days?) titled, “The Liqueur We’re Putting in All of Our Holiday Cocktails”. They just add Amaro Nonino to a Rusty Nail, Bee’s Knees, and a Collins.

This cocktail is considered by liquor.com to be a riff on The Last Word, with equal parts of each ingredient. It tastes nothing like The Last Word, so let’s get that out of the way. But it is oddly delicious. Unexpected. The bourbon is totally there, but sweetness and orange play strong roles. And if I’ve said it once I’ve said it 1000 times, I love a sweet bourbon drink.
