Paloma

I found this recipe on thespruceeats.com.

tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice

Tequila loves grapefruit. Mexicans know this already, because the Paloma is the most popular tequila drink in Mexico. Here in the US we drink more margaritas, and my research tells me that the Paloma is mostly unknown to states that don’t border Mexico. (It is found on lots of menus here in Austin.)⁣

This drink is tequila and grapefruit soda with a squeeze of lime. Grapefruit soda? Like SQUIRT? 😆 Yes. In my memory, Squirt and Fresca were popular in the 70s and 80s, but I didn’t even know they existed anymore (they do). I remember them being sodas that your mom would let you have when she was was okay with you riding a sugar high, but didn’t want to deal with a kid buzzing on sugar AND caffeine. Orange Crush was another one of these. ⁣

I used a sugar-sweetened grapefruit soda for my Paloma. I’m trying to use good ingredients in this project, and most sodas on the US are sweetened with corn syrup, and my research tells me that this drink is better with a soda that uses cane sugar. I used a mixture of sugar, salt, and chili powder on the rim, which is a nice kick. This drink tastes like summer.⁣
