Old Fashioned

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

bourbon, sugar, bitters, water, orange peel

Like other drinks, the origins are unclear. The Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky, claims the old fashioned cocktail was invented there. So, The City of Louisville named the old fashioned as its official cocktail. Each year, during the first two weeks of June (prolly not this year), Louisville celebrates “Old Fashioned Fortnight” which encompasses bourbon events, cocktail specials and National Bourbon Day which is (was?) celebrated on June 14.⁣

But Wisconsin has its own Old Fashioned thing going on. In Wisconsin, you get asked two questions when you order: Whiskey or brandy? Sour or sweet? Then you might be surprised when the drink arrives…Wisconsin supper clubs garnish Old Fashioneds with a maraschino cherry, pickled mushroom, or pickled Brussels sprout, or even a funky combination of all three. (Naturally, this took me down a research rabbit hole “what is a supper club?”, and that’s a whole thing.)⁣

For purist Old Fashioned drinkers, Wisconsin is nuts. The recipe from the Maker’s Mark website is bourbon, a splash of water, bitters, sugar, orange peel, and a cherry for garnish. I’ll say that the taste isn’t much different from the Manhattan I tried yesterday, except that orange and bourbon go together really well. ⁣

The glass used here was a gift from a friend who was taking glass-blowing lessons at the time, about 20 years ago. Even back then, I loved collecting glasses.⁣
