Nordic Summer

aquavit, Aperol, lime juice⁣

I found this recipe on moodymixologist.com. ⁣

I added aquavit to my bar! Also called akvavit, it is a Scandinavian spirit with the same alcohol as base spirits, about 40 abv. The brand I got is Aalborg, made in Denmark.⁣

From what I’m reading about aquavit it is always spices forward, either caraway or dill, or both. This brand is dominantly caraway, but every couple of sips I think I get a little dill, too.⁣

The earliest known reference to aquavit is from 1531, and it was OF COURSE considered medicinal. On Wikipedia it says that it is is popularly quipped that if you drink it while eating fish, it helps the fish swim down to your stomach. ⁣🐟

I would compare it most closely with gin because of how it mixes in a cocktail, and how it’s made. Like gin, it starts as a plain base spirit with no flavor, pretty much vodka, and the spices (or botanicals in gin) are added later. Gosh, the more I sip, the more flavors I’m getting. Maybe a little cardamom, too? ⁣

It is delicious! You gotta like the flavor of caraway and dill, of course. In this cocktail it is mixed with two other strong flavors – Aperol and a lot of lime juice – and it absolutely holds its place in the drink. ⁣
