This drink has become so popular recently…I had never heard of it until a few years ago, and then suddenly there were copper mugs everywhere. ⁣

The history of the Moscow Mule is so American. In the 1940s the company that bought the rights to sell Smirnoff Vodka in the US was having a tough time getting Americans to drink vodka. They started an ad campaign, first with bartenders, then with hip celebrities, all drinking Smirnoff Moscow Mules in copper mugs. (See image in first comment.) They basically put Moscow Mules in the hands of the people who were the Instagram influencers at the time, and the US started drinking vodka. ⁣

My first experience with this drink was a few years ago when a friend offered me a taste. It was TERRIBLE. It tasted like pure lime juice. He said there was indeed too much lime in that drink, and that they are normally tasty.⁣

The Moscow Mule is vodka, ginger beer, and lime. It’s good. I think the key is a snappy ginger beer, because vodka doesn’t have a lot of taste. And don’t go nutso on the lime. 😜⁣
