I found this recipe on thespruceeats.com.
gin, orange juice, absinthe, grenadine
This cocktail was created in the 1920s by Harry MacElhone, a famous bartender and cocktail book author. He named this drink after the pseudo-scientific idea that grafting monkey testicle tissue into humans was the key to health, vigor, and drive. This crazy idea was developed by the Russian doctor Serge Voronoff.
Okay.
Apparently, ol’ Harry named the drink Monkey Gland because it was a hot topic that might draw in some customers. Even the New York Times ran a story titled, “MONKEY GLAND, LATEST COCKTAIL”. Geez.
So. Weird.
I added absinthe to my bar. 🧚♂️ I don’t really like anise flavor, but everything I read about this drink is about getting the balance right. I only swirled the absinthe in the empty glass before pouring. And it worked! There is only a hint of anise flavor, and it is balancing beautifully. Yummy pink drink. You know me and my love of Prohibition-era gin drinks.
