Mary Pickford

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

rum, pineapple juice, grenadine, maraschino liqueur⁣

People who like old movies will probably recognize the name Mary Pickford, I didn’t, but I’m glad I know of her now. She was a Canadian-born film actress and producer and one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscars every year. While she was acting, she was known as “America’s Sweetheart”, “the girl with the curls”, and “Queen of the Movies”. True Hollywood royalty, sent down to us from Canada. ⁣

On to the cocktail. It is said to have been created for her in the 1920s at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba on a trip she took to Havana with her husband Douglas Fairbanks and friend Charlie Chaplin. From what I know about Cuba and Prohibition, I’m guessing they were in Cuba TO DRINK. Having a drink named after you on a drinking trip is a nice souvenir.⁣

I have been hesitant to try this drink because I’ve only tried one other cocktail with pineapple juice, Park Avenue, and it was terrible. (Turns out pineapple juice and sweet vermouth aren’t a winning combo.) So I upgraded my juice to cold-pressed and decided to give this a try. What a treat! ⁣

This cocktail is bright and happy, and the sort of thing you might want to kick off a night of dancing. It’s sweet and flavorful, and when you shake the drink the pineapple juice makes a little foam that tickles your mouth. Delightful. ⁣
