Jive Turkey

rye, bourbon, Amaro Ciociaro, dry vermouth, St-Germain, Angostura bitters
I used Amaro Nonino as a substitute for Amaro Ciociaro.

I found this recipe in the Death & Co Modern Classic Cocktails book.

I was first intrigued by the name of this one…”jive turkey” was something that the kids called each other when I was in elementary school. I remember they learned about it from Saturday Night Live – I wasn’t allowed to stay up that late, so the kids who came to school with quotes from SNL were the cool kids.

But we have the internet now! And I found a spoof called “The Exorcist 2 (ft. Richard Pryor)” on YouTube. I am SURE this was the SNL skit that had my cool classmates talking. Because they were using Laraine Newman’s demon voice when they said it. OMG, Richard Pryor was very funny. The skit is worth watching, if you have five minutes.

Oh yeah, the cocktail! This is for sure a modern classic. And like I always say, the perfectly-balanced, simple, three-ingredient cocktails have already been made. So modern classics are a delicate balance of lots of ingredients. This is boozy and beautiful.

Another “NG” (no garnish) cocktail. I think garnishes are part of the fun, obvs, but I have to respect the wishes of the mixologist who combined these ingredients into a brilliant cocktail. So, NG.
