Hurricane

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

light rum, dark rum, passion fruit juice, orange juice, lime, simple syrup, grenadine⁣

How would you like a nice Hawaiian Punch? Sure! ⁣🥊

Named after the shape of the glass, which looks like a hurricane oil lamp glass shade. This drink was invented shortly after prohibition, when whiskey was in short supply. Booze distributors allowed bars to have one case of whiskey if they bought several cases of rum…what to do with all that rum? ⁣

This drink uses passion fruit juice – a juice I had never bought or tasted until today. It’s funny, because I think passion fruit is kind of popular outside the US, but it has never caught on here. On The Great British Baking Show, there is a passion fruit flavored cake or pastry just about every episode. I didn’t even know what the fruit looked like until I started researching this drink.⁣

I had a swig of the juice before making the cocktail, and it is the tangy/sweet taste in Hawaiian Punch! I guess I thought that flavor was unique to Hawaiian Punch, and not a natural juice!⁣

This drink is good, but VERY boozy. This is the first drink I’ve made that has 4 oz of liquor (half light rum, half dark rum). It tastes like a sunburnt hangover. Really. I wonder how many people have said, “My head hurts…how many Hurricanes did I drink last night?” ⁣😆
