dark rum, unsalted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves
Hot buttered rum, you make the rockin’ world go round.
How have I missed out on drinks like this my whole life? I remember my mom had a little tub of hot buttered rum batter in the fridge for a hundred years, but I don’t remember anyone ever actually making it into a drink. (My mom doesn’t drink.) I remember she also had a strange collection of bottles – Frangelico, Midori, Amaretto…I think one of her friends moved and dropped these off at our house. They just sat in the back of the cupboard.
Hot buttered rum was a popular Tiki cocktail in the 1940s, and you might recall seeing a tub of Trader Vic’s batter in your own family fridge when you were a kid.
Back to today. This is perfect. It’s all the spices you want this time of year, and boozy, and warm. Did I mention sweet and delicious? Wow.
I know someone will ask about the mug! It is from a set of knitting mugs by Debbie Bliss. I’m not sure that they’re available anymore from anywhere but eBay, but I’m sure you can still find them.
