Honolulu No. 2

I found this recipe in the Savoy Cocktail book and on diffordsguide.com.

gin, Benedictine, maraschino liqueur (equal parts)

I went looking through The Savoy Cocktail Book for another drink that uses Benedictine. When I started mixing this, I thought, dang…that’s a LOT of maraschino liqueur. And sure enough, this drink is straight-up TOO SWEET. Tasty and complex, but too sweet.

I put the liquid back into the shaker, added a squeeze of lemon and another ounce of gin. I shook it and poured it back into the glass with a splash of soda. Much better, and what was a single cocktail is now two for me to enjoy.

All’s well that ends well.

To answer a question I get all the time – my favorite cocktail. I think it’s safe to say that since I tried a Rusty Nail a few weeks ago, it is my go-to now. I mix it 50/50 with scotch and Drambuie. I use a big ice cube and sip on it for a long time…it turns out I enjoy the first, strong sip as much as I enjoy the much-diluted last sip. I drank one while watching the Fran Lebowitz documentary series on Netflix last night, in fact.
