Flying Dutchman

I followed the recipe on liquor.com.

genever (Dutch gin), Benedictine, Yellow Chartreuse, lemon juice

This is a modern cocktail, and it tastes like a modern cocktail. I’ve said it before – all of the simple drink recipes have been made before. Modern mixologists are combining old ingredients in new ways and adjusting the amounts to make balanced, flavorful cocktails. This one is a lot of flavor, and perfectly balanced.

I knew I had heard “The Flying Dutchman” before, but I didn’t know what it is. This drink is named after the legend of a ghost ship, “which was said to never be able to make port, doomed to sail the oceans forever. The myth is likely to have originated from the 17th-century Golden Age of the Dutch East India Company” (from Wikipedia).

So, starting my weekend with a drink named after a scary maritime story. I’m looking at the links available for Flying Dutchman, and I see diving down a rabbit hole in my near future.

I want all gin drinkers to give genever a try! It’s so good! On your next run to the liquor store, get your regular gin and a bottle of genever. You’ll like it.
