I picked this cocktail because I bought a little Crown Royal 🇨🇦 mini bottle, and this recipe is a way to use CR in a holiday drink. While I was mixing it, I realized this is just a Rye & Dry with some cran. ⁣

I learned from comments from my Canadian friends that Rye & Dry is a popular drink in Canada – more popular than the Canadian Cocktail I posted, (that no Canadian had ever heard of). They shared stories of their parents having grown-up game nights around the card table, each person with a Rye & Dry, and probably an ash tray. ⁣

The Crown Royal is nice, and very smooth. I just learned in mixology class today that Canadian whisky is sometimes called “brown vodka”, because it can be distilled and blended more than whiskeys from other countries, therefore stripping out more of the flavors (for good or bad). Canadian whisky is also considered a good “gateway whiskey” for white spirit drinkers who want to give whiskey a try.
