Boilermaker

I found this recipe on liquor.com.

(aka Texas Two-Step, Beer and a Bump, Citywide Special, or just “a shot and a beer”)⁣

beer, bourbon or rye ⁣
I used Texas beer and Texas bourbon in Austin, Texas…so I suppose mine drink is a Texas Two-Step.⁣

Such a simple cocktail, and so many variations around the world! The assumed history of this drink is as a working man’s choice of beverage after a long day of backbreaking work. Like, as a boilermaker. ⁣

But there are so many ways to drink a Boilermaker. You can “down in one” the whiskey and sip the beer, you can back-and-forth sip the whiskey and the beer, you can pour your shot into your beer glass or bottle, or drop the whole shot glass in as I have here. That makes a very satisfactory sound, btw. ⁣

I could have researched this one all day, because pretty much every place on earth that produces beer has their own names and traditions for a shot and a beer. In the US alone, there are dozens of names for it, many including spins on local beers, like “Imp ‘n’ Arn”, which is Imperial whiskey and Iron City Beer, exclusive to Pittsburgh. In Holland, a shot of Jenever and beer is called a Kopstootje, meaning “little headbutt”. If you want to see more of these, there is a good list on the Boilermaker Wikipedia page.⁣

This combination can be as fancy or ordinary as you like, and apparently there is a trend for crafty bartenders to come up with the best whiskey and beer pairings. Mine isn’t all that fancy, but I used both a bourbon and a beer that I like (Herman Marshall bourbon and Shiner Light Blonde beer), and they go well together. The bourbon definitely kicks the beer up a notch, but not so much that I can’t taste the beer. It’s really good.⁣

If you’re still reading, here’s something about the photo. These two photos were not easy to shoot when you’re quarantined alone! I had the job of dropping the shot glass AND snapping the photos…it was an elaborate setup with several dry (literally, dry) runs. Pretty fun, though.⁣
